Kane County Cougars News Release
Peoria, IL - The Kane County Cougars' lead over the Peoria Chiefs atop the Western Division is back to 1 1/2 games after the Cougars fell 4-2 last night at O'Brien Field. Jeff Baisley drove in two runs to put his league-leading total at 44, and Anthony Recker continued his hot month of May with two more hits. Jared Lansford suffered the loss, and his consecutive scoreless innings streak ended at 25 1/3, a run that went back to May 7.
Baisley delivered a triple in the first inning against Chiefs starter Mitch Atkins that scored Mike Massaro for an immediate 1-0 Kane County lead. Lansford had a shutout until he allowed two runs in the fifth and another pair in the sixth to put the Cougars in a 4-1 hole. Lansford (4-2) allowed four runs -- three earned -- over five-plus innings. He walked three and fanned three.
After the rocky first inning, Atkins (4-0) held the Cougars in check, sending down 14 consecutive hitters at one point to get the win. Baisley's second RBI arrived from a groundout in the eighth inning that provided the 4-2 final.
The Cougars had a few other scoring chances but couldn't capitalize. They left the bases loaded in the second, had two men on base with no outs in the seventh but didn't score and left a man stranded when the game ended. Ed Campusano recorded his league-leading 16th save. T.J. Franco and Brad Kilby combined for three scoreless relief innings to keep the Cougars' offense in the game.
The Cougars (31-20) and Chiefs (29-21) battle again Wednesday night at 6:30 CDT, as Vince Mazzaro (5-4, 5.29) faces left-hander Donnie Veal (4-2, 3.02).
