West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - It's been more than 70 years since there's been an outdoor boxing event in Grand Rapids, but this July, that's going to change. On Saturday, July 15, Blue Cap Promotions and the the Sprinkler Fitters Union Local 669 will present Boxing at the Ballpark - The Hits Just Keep Coming. The event will feature a unique boxing grand slam with four main events.
"This is going to be a high profile event," said Denny Baxter, Whitecaps partner and founder of Blue Cap Promotions. "The Whitecaps have a strong reputation for conducting well run events and I've teamed up with Paul Ferrier, who has experience in putting on quality boxing shows. Matchmaker Bruce Kielty has lined up a tremendous boxing card and the combination of the three should result in the top sports attraction of the summer."
Boxing at the Ballpark's first main event will see Muskegon's Rocky Smith (13-5-0) taking on Teddy Muller (17-7-2) of Moline, Illinois in a light heavyweight match. During Muller's last visit to Grand Rapids, he broke the jaw of local favorite Troy Rowland. The night's second main event will feature Chicago's Miguel Hernandez (19-4-0) going against former two time world champion Luis "Yori Boy" Campas (87-8-0) from Mexico in a clash of middleweights. Both Hernandez and Campas are world ranked fighters and Campas has been in the ring with current greats including Felix Trinidad, Fernando Vargas and Oscar DeLaHoya. Undefeated heavyweights David Robinson (21-0-0) will meet Rick Dyer (10-0-0) and welterweights Lanardo Tyner (11-0-0) will face off against Gilbert Venegas (9-2-2) in the other two main events. The undefeated U.S. Olympic heavyweight Devin Vargas (9-0-0) and local favorites Doug LaFontsee, Ramon Guevarra and Jennifer Salinas are also expected to be on the card.
The night will also serve as the kick-off fundraiser for the Michigan Golden Gloves Association. The organization is going to be holding the National Golden Gloves tournament in Grand Rapids in May of 2008 and needs to raise $100,000 to cover the costs of hosting the prestigious event. "Blue Cap Promotions intends on donating $1 for every paid admission to the Golden Gloves cause," said Baxter. "Dave Packer has done a great job running the Golden Gloves and we are proud to support his efforts."
The ring for Boxing at the Ballpark will be placed over the pitchers mound. The field will be protected with a field covering and the boxers will enter the ring through the dugouts. A limited number of ringside, field seats and VIP field tables will be available for the event. Tickets for Boxing at the Ballpark will go on sale Friday, June 2 at 10 a.m. and can be purchased at the Fifth Third Ballpark box office, on-line at whitecapsbaseball.com or by calling 616-784-4131.
