Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Winnipeg, MB - A goaltenders duel lead to a tight affair for the Medicine Hat Tigers, who were unable to dethrone the Winnipeg ICE for the second time in as many weeks, falling 3-1 at the Wayne Fleming Arena Tuesday Night.
The Tigers got off on the right foot thanks to Shane Smith's (Cessford, AB) 19th of the season from Tyler MacKenzie (Red Deer, AB) at 7:39 to make it 1-0 Tigers but the ICE would catch a break on a bounce from behind the Tigers net at 10:03, Zach Benson would slide one past Tigers starter Evan May (Nanaimo, BC) for the game tying goal in the opening frame but excellent goaltending from May and Daniel Hauser would keep things all square at 1-1 after one. In the deadlock, the Tigers would outshoot the ICE 13-9 in the 1st.
In the second period tight defence giving no quarter would be the main strategy of both the Tigers and ICE would ring though but Winnipeg would find a gap and counter as Matthew Savoie would get in behind the Tigers defence while shorthanded and snap the go ahead goal to make it 2-1 Winnipeg with 1:50 to go in the second leading up to a big third period for Medicine Hat.
Despite a strong push and a clean sheet penalty kill, Medicine Hat couldn't find the equalizer and with the net empty with more than 2:30 to go in regulation, the Tigers did everything but beat Hauser and the ICE would finish things off as Connor Geekie would score with 52 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
With the loss the Tigers drop their record to 26-25-8-1 and still hold the 7th spot in the Eastern Conference standings despite putting up a second consecutive clean sheet on the penalty kill going 3/3, the power play could not counter going 0/4.
Next up for the Tigers is another pivotal match-up in the Eastern Conference Playoff Race as the Orange & Black will visit Westoba Place and the Brandon Wheat Kings for the final time this season. The sweep are leading the season series with Brandon going 3-0 in the first trio of games.
You can catch all the action on the home of the Tigers, WILD 94.5 with Gino De Paoli, starting with the pre-game show at 5:45 MT/ST and puck drop is set for 7 PM.
