CALGARY - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club would like to congratulate alumni Brendan De Jong, Jake Gricius and Matthew Quigley and the University of Calgary Dinos on their Canada West Championship victory Sunday night.
The Dinos prevailed 2-1 in a decisive game three against the University of Alberta Golden Bears to win their first conference championship since 1996. Gricius recorded one assist in the comeback victory, setting up the game-tying goal in the third period.
Gricius led the Dinos in scoring during the regular season with 15 goals and finished second with 34 points during his third year of Sports hockey. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native was previously named the Canada West WHL graduate of the month in January. Quigley just completed his third year of university and drew into 17 games this season and five more in the playoffs. De Jong wrapped up his fourth year with the University of Calgary and set a new season high with 27 games and 18 points.
The three former Hawks were teammates for three seasons in Portland and won five playoff series together from 2017-2019. Spending their entire career with the Winterhawks, De Jong, Gricius and Quigley combined for 814 games and 303 points.
The Winterhawks would also like to congratulate alumni Jared Freadrich, Ryan Hughes, and Josh Paterson on a terrific season with the University of Alberta.
