Mavs win their first series at Taylor Stadium

July 6, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Mid-Missouri Mavericks News Release

After taking 2 of 3 games from the Windy City Thunderbolts, the Mavs are back in action tonight as they play the first of three against the Evansville Otters!

On the verge of falling into the cellar for the first time since June 21, the Mid-Missouri Mavericks reverted back to their ninth inning heroics.

The Mavericks (13-25) scored a pair of runs with one out in the ninth inning to reel off a 5-4, come from behind victory over the Windy City Thunderbolts (12- 27) Tuesday at Taylor Stadium. The victory was Mid- Mo's third ninth inning comeback this season, and puts them a game and a half ahead of Thunderbolts for fifth place in the West Division.

Mid-Missouri broke a scoreless tie in the 6 th, with three runs off Windy City starter Josh Glynn. Brent Metheny, who extended his hit streak to a Frontier- League leading 23 games with a second inning double, plated Dusty Hillman with a single. The Mavs scored two more in the sixth off a pair of botched would-be double play balls by Windy City, who committed four errors on the night.

However, the Thunderbolts answered with a pair of runs in the seventh, and knocked Steve Soja out in the eighth with back-to-back doubles from Nick Johnson and Justin Schuda, the second which tied the game. The 'Bolts added a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Scott Vetter.

That set the stage for a dramatic bottom of the ninth which kept the Mavericks off the cellar. Greg Buscher led off the frame with a single off Brandon Kellbach. Pinch-runner Thomas Bowker advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Kottke, and scooted to third on a base hit by Dusty Young, off former Mavericks hurler Lenny Bays, who replaced Kellbach. Bays would not retire a batter, as Josh Wettlaufer pulled a single to right, plating Bowker to tie the game. Three pitches later, Dusty Hillman lined a single to center, and center fielder Justin Niefer had trouble scooping up the ball, allowing Dusty Young to touch home plate, giving the Mavericks the win. Mid-Mo begins a three-game series with Evansville at Taylor Stadium tonight. Game time is at 7:05 PM and can be heard live on www.midmomavs.com.
