Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana - John Martinez continues to climb to the top of the Frontier League record book as he won for the ninth straight time this season. The Roosters lost to Martinez in the final game of the series, 8-7, on Tuesday. The Paints scored first and often, but Richmond rallied in the late innings to make it close. The comeback fell short however as the Roosters lost their third straight series.
The Chillicothe bats started to get hot in the fourth inning. The Paints scored eight runs over four innings. Beau Blacken had three hits and three RBI in the span, including a solo home run. Mike Spry hit a two-run double and Jeff Funaro added a solo shot to contribute to the scoring. The Roosters got two runs in the sixth on a two-run homer by Mike Reese, his second in two days. Two more runs scored over the seventh and eighth innings for Richmond on two RBI from Mike Bidwell. He led off the seventh with a solo home run and hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the eighth for another run. That left the score 8-4 after eight innings of play.
Richmond rallied in the ninth scoring three more runs to cut it to a one-run lead at 8-7. Joe Rhomberg belted his second homer of the year, a two-run shot, and Aaron Hepner had a RBI double in the inning, but the final out was recorded on a fly ball to right field ending Richmond's threat. John Martinez (9-0) won for Chillicothe while Robby Read (1-2) took the loss. Nick Cavanagh (1) earned the save.
The Roosters (17-22) will travel to Windy City (12-27) for a three-game series against the Thunderbolts starting on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. (Indiana Time). Jared Howton (2-1, 4.88 ERA) will make his seventh start of the season. The Roosters swept the Thunderbolts in Richmond earlier this season.
