Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks thrilled an early Sunday evening crowd of 5,041 fans with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Fort Wayne Komets at Independence Events Center. Andrew Courtney scored two goals, including one in the shootout for the Mavs. Sebastien Thinel scored the game-winner in the shootout in the fourth round, giving the Mavs their sixth consecutive home victory and seventh win in their last eight games. The Mavs now travel to Tulsa on Tuesday to face the Tulsa Oilers.
Andrew Courtney put the Mavs up 1-0 with an unassisted goal early on in the game, just five minutes into regulation. Fort Wayne responded late in the period with a goal from Colin Chaulk with just 48 seconds remaining in the opening period. Chaulk's goal was also unassisted. The Komets outshot the Mavs 13-6 in the period.
Fort Wayne took command of the game late in the second period with two late goals from Jamie Milam and Bobby Chaumont. Milam's tally came on the power play for Fort Wayne. The Komets again held the edge in shots over Missouri in the period, by a count of 17-14 and had outshot the Mavs 30-20 through two periods.
The Mavericks brought the score within one on a goal from Brandon Smith with five and a half minutes to go in regulation. Patrick Schafer assisted on the goal. The Mavs tied the game one minute later on Andrew Courtney's second goal of the game. Assisting on the game-tying goal was David Pszenyczny.
With the game tied after 60 minutes, the Mavs and Komets headed to overtime. The Mavs killed off a tripping minor called on Kris Hogg to preserve the game at 3-3 and headed to the shootout. Andrew Courtney and Sebastien Thinel scored for the Mavs and Charlie Effinger stopped four of the five Fort Wayne shooters to give the Mavs their seventh victory in their last eight games.
The Mavs now sit alone in fourth place in the CHL's Turner Conference, with a one-point lead over the Rapid City Rush.
The Mavericks now head to Oklahoma to face the Tulsa Oilers on Tuesday. The Mavs then hit the road to Bloomington to face the Bloomington Blaze on Friday night before kicking off a seven-game homestand next Saturday night against the Blaze at Independence Events Center.
