Mavs Lose in Shootout to Mallards, 5-4

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks lost their first home game in eight games, Friday night at Independence Events Center, losing 5-4 to the Quad City Mallards in the shootout. The Mallards scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation and beat the Mavs 2-0 in the shootout. Andrew Favot had two assists for the Mavericks and Ed McGrane had a goal and an assist for Missouri. The Mavs remain unbeaten in regulation at home in their last nine games, for an 8-0-1 record.
Eric Giosa opened up the scoring with a power play goal six minutes into the opening period. John Snowden and Brandon Marino assisted on the opening tally. Three minutes later, the Mavericks responded with a power play of their own from David Pszenyczny. Assisting on the power play marker were Andrew Favot and Ed McGrane. The Mavs added two quick goals from Kris Hogg at the 11:26 mark of the period and Ed McGrane at 13:22. Favot recorded his second assist of the game on McGrane's goal. The Mallards added a late goal from Mickey Lang to cut the Mavs lead to one goal with 16 seconds remaining in the period. The fists were flying in the first period as well, as the Mavs and Mallards combined for 28 penalty minutes in the period, including four fighting majors.
For what the first period featured in action, the second period was lacking. Both teams failed to score and combined for just 18 shots in the period.
Brandon Coccimgilio doubled the Mavs lead just over a minute into the final period on a nice centering feed from Dale Mahovsky. Also assisting on the goal was Cole Ruwe, playing in his 100th regular season game as a Maverick. Quad City drew closer with a goal from Sean Flanagan. The Mallards tied the game with 2:17 remaining in regulation on an unassisted goal from Obi Aduba.
At the end of regulation, both teams were tied at 4-4 and the game headed to overtime. After five minutes of scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout. Quad City goaltender David Brown held Missouri scoreless and the last two Mallards shooters scored in rounds three and four, sealing the 5-4 victory.
The Mavs wrap up their two-game, weekend set with Quad City tomorrow night at Independence Events Center. Next weekend, the Mavs host the Arizona Sundogs for two games on Friday and Saturday, before closing out their seven-game home stand against the Rapid City Rush on February 7.
