First Place Showdown in the Berry
January 27, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Allen Americans News Release
Allen, Texas - The Allen Americans host the top seeded Wichita Thunder tonight in a battle for first place in the Berry Conference. Puck drop is at 7:05 PM.
The Americans are 1-0-2 against Wichita this year, losing twice in a shootout to the Thunder in mid October. The Americans are 1-0-0 in the Allen Event Center against Wichita this season, taking a 5-3 decision in early December. Allen is 6-0-2 lifetime against Wichita, having never lost to the Thunder in regulation play.
"This should be great game tonight," said Americans Head Coach and GM Dwight Mullins. "Both teams are battling for the top spot right now, but more important is the two points, to stay ahead of the pack."
The Americans and Thunder made a big deal in the off-season, with Allen trading starting netminder Chris Whitley to the Thunder for two players, one of which never played for Allen and the other, Steve Kaunisto, was dealt away in December. Chris Whitley never reported to Wichita either, electing to sign a deal in Europe.
Tonight's game also marks the return of Dustin Donaghy, who played for the Americans at the end of the 2009-2010 season and early in 2010-2011, before being dealt to Wichita. Donaghy, in 29 games for the Thunder, has five points, 3 goals and 2 assists.
The Americans play three home games in three nights, beginning this evening against Wichita. The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees will be here on Saturday night at 7:05 PM, and Sunday night 5:05 PM. On Friday and Saturday the Americans welcome back Two Dollar Beer & 2 Dollar Dogs. Call 972-912-1000 for www.ticketmaster.com .
