
Mallards Rally, Edge Missouri in Shootout 4-3; Quad City Ends Skid on Road

INDEPENDENCE, MO - Brandon Marino and Jeremy Boyer both converted penalty shots after Obi Aduba scored late in the third period to tie the game and the Quad City Mallards snapped a four game losing streak by defeating the host Missouri Mavericks 5-4 in a shootout Friday night. With the win, the Mallards, who sit in the third place in Central Hockey League's Turner Conference, improved to 22-16-1 (45 points).
Marino and Boyer- both of whom picked up assists in regulation- scored back-to-back in the shootout while Mallards goaltender David Brown (30 saves) stopped all four Missouri penalty shots.
The Mallards rallied from a 4-2 third period deficit to force overtime and- eventually- the shootout. The Mavericks' Brandon Coccimiglio widened what had been a 3-2 Missouri lead to two goals by scoring from the left wing circle just over a minute into the third. Quad City drew back within one when Sean Flanagan batted a rebound in at 9:41. Aduba- who also had an assist- then fired the tying goal home from the high slot with just 2:17 left in regulation.
The Mallards to spent much of the evening battling from behind after the Mavericks scored three straight first period goals. The Missouri attack only broke loose after the Mallards produced the game's first goal while on the power play when Eric Giosa drove the puck home from the high slot at the six minute mark of the first.
The Mavericks tied the score at one with a power play goal of their own. Dave Pszenyczny provided the equalizer from the left wing circle at 8:57 of the first. Kris Hogg buried a rebound to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead at 11:26. Ed McGrane stretched the gap to a pair by scoring the third Missouri goal in a span of four minutes and 25 seconds from the side of the net at 13:22.
The Mallards rebounded to trim the Maverick lead to 3-2 with just 16 seconds left in the first. Mickey Lang roofed the rebound after Jared Brown's initial bid was stopped by Missouri netminder Charlie Effinger (43 saves).
The Mallards return to action tomorrow night in Missouri against the Mavericks. The Mallards next play on home ice next Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Fort Wayne Komets
