Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks and Colorado Eagles put on quite the New Year's Eve show Friday night at Independence Events Center. The Mavericks and Eagles traded goals and physicality all night long, but the Mavericks' late push would not pay off, as the Eagles skated to a 4-3 victory.
Adam Hogg got the offense started for the Eagles three minutes into the game when he buried a shot from the slot past All Star Robby Nolan for the first tally of the game. Matt Glasser was credited with an assist on the goal. The Eagles weren't done with their early assault on the All Star Nolan, as Kyle Peto found the back of the net on a pass from Riley Nelson. Kevin Ulanski also got an assist on the goal. The Eagles two goals in the first period were the first time in 11 games that Nolan had allowed two goals in the first period of a game. The Mavs took two penalties in the period, but kept the Eagles from scoring a power play goal. The Eagles were not charged with any penalties in the period. The Mavericks could only tally just four shots in the period. Meanwhile, the Eagles pelted Robby Nolan with 11 shots in the period.
Missouri found their way on to the scoreboard a quarter of the way through the middle frame as Nathan O'Nabigon took a pass from Mike Berry and rifled it into the back of the Colorado net for a power play goal. Defenseman Cole Ruwe was given an additional helper on the goal as well. The Eagles were quick to strike back though, as Dan Sullivan beat Nolan for his first goal as an Eagle. Riley Nelson and Peto were given assists on the goal. The see-saw battle continued as Carlyle Lewis ripped home his fifth goal of the season and brought the Mavs back within one goal. Mike Berry got his second assist of the night and Derek Pallardy recorded his first point of the contest with an assist on the goal. The Mavs got more offensive pressure on Penner in the second period, showcased by their nine shots in the second period. The Eagles were held to a modest six shots on net.
The Eagles continued to extend lead after lead. Seven minutes into the third period, Kevin Ulanski beat Nolan on his blocker side to extend the Eagles' lead back out to two goals once again. Brett Thurston recorded his fourth assist of the year on the goal. Right on cue, the Mavs stormed right back just five minutes later, getting a goal from Simon Watson. Assisting on the goal were Ray DiLauro and Ryan Jardine. With the assist, Jardine extended his point streak to seven games. The Mavs fought tooth and nail to even the score, but the Eagles were able to stave off the final push by Missouri and take home the final contest of 2010 with a 4-3 victory over the Mavericks.
