Quad City Mallards News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - Paul Kelly scored his second goal of the night at 2:22 of sudden death to give the Quad City Mallards a dramatic 6-5 overtime win over the host Fort Wayne Komets Friday night.
Kelly swept home the winner from the left wing circle to cap off a wild evening that saw the two teams combine for nine goals over just the first two periods.
The roller coaster ride started early. Fort Wayne opened the scoring when Mathieu Curadeau batted in a rebound at 5:42 of the first. Brandon Warner doubled the Komet lead at 9:52 by tipping in a power play goal from the slot.
Undaunted, the Mallards would bounce back to rip off two goals in 22 seconds and even the score at two. The Flock was on the power play when Darren McMillan wristed Quad City's first goal home from the blue line at 11:47. Kelly then pounced on a loose puck on the doorstep to tie the score at two at 12:05.
Back-to-back Quad City penalties would cost the Mallards late in the opening period. Frankie DeAngelis backhanded a 5-on-3 power play goal from the slot at 17:45 to give to the Komets the 3-2 lead they took into the first intermission.
Quad City bounced back to tie the game at three just 27 seconds into the second period. Zac Pearson drove the equalizer home from the right wing circle. After Pearson's goal, Nick Boucher replaced starter Kevin Reiter in the Fort Wayne net. Obi Aduba gave the Mallards their first lead of the night when he deflected a power play goal home at 6:46 of the second. Warner's second power play goal- another deflection from the slot- knotted the score at four at 15:04 of the second. Jake Riddle scored the Mallards' third power play goal and the sixth man advantage goal of the night overall from the side of the net to reclaim the advantage for Quad City with just 68 seconds left in the period.
The 5-4 Mallard lead lasted only until Tab Lardner buried what would prove to be the final goal of regulation from close range 48 seconds into the third period, but in the end Kelly would provide the overtime heroics for Quad City.
The Mallards return to action tomorrow night against the Missouri Mavericks on the road. The Flock next plays on home ice on Friday, January 7 at 7:05 p.m. against the Tulsa Oilers. The first 1,000 fans ages 12 and under through the doors of the i wireless Center for that game will receive free kids' 40" wooden hockey sticks courtesy of CBS 4 and 97X.
