Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Central Hockey League (CHL) All-Star Team has added a talented, young forward to their reserves with the selection of Missouri Mavericks forward Nick Sirota to the 2011 CHL All-Star Team. The second-year forward earns the spot from the voice of the fans who voted loudly over the last two days in the CHL's Facebook Fan Vote, presented by CHL Loyalty Rewards (www.chlpoints.com).
The Fox Lake, Wisconsin native held off Bossier-Shreveport's Justin Aikins, Colorado's Riley Nelson and Odessa's Todd Robinson in the first ever CHL Fan Vote. Sirota finished with 40.4% of the votes cast, while Nelson finished second receiving 26.8% of the votes. In all, 1,456 fans voted in the 48-hour contest that launched Wednesday afternoon on the CHL's Facebook page. Aikins earned 19.6% of the votes and Robinson garnered 13.2%.
"Nick has really become one of the premier players in this league and is very deserving of this recognition," said Scott Hillman, Mavericks Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations and one of two co-coaches for the CHL All-Star Team. "It is not just his points that make him a valuable player with our club. He plays hard on both sides of the puck and he is an explosive penalty killer. His offensive numbers have been consistent and appear to be on the rise. I would like to thank all of our fans for helping him be recognized as a top performer in the CHL"
"This is a great honor and I'm very thankful to the fans who voted for me," said Sirota. "This just goes to show that we have the best fans in Missouri. It certainly would not have been possible without my teammates, and I am very excited to represent the Mavericks organization at the All-Star Game."
As a part of the vote was a contest to determine one lucky fan as the CHL Facebook Fan Vote All-Star Fan. The winner is Mark Troy from Independence, Missouri who will receive a CHL Prize Pack and 1,000 CHL Loyalty Reward points. The CHL Loyalty Reward program is the fastest growing sports affinity program in North America and it gives fans the chance to earn and redeem points on many items including hockey items from your favorite CHL team.
Sirota is the leading scorer on the Turner Conference leading Mavericks with 26 points (13-13=26) and is carrying a +11 plus/minus. The 5-10, 188-pound forward had a memorable rookie season last year earning a spot on the CHL All-Rookie Team with 19 goals and 26 assists in 62 games played.
The former college star at Northern Michigan University played 145 games with the Panthers scoring 45 goals with 45 assists during his four seasons. His best campaign came during his junior year when he scored 18 goals and 18 assists.
The 2011 CHL All-Star Game is scheduled for Wednesday, January 12 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Arena in Rapid City, South Dakota and will feature a format that pits the host Rapid City Rush versus a team of CHL All-Stars comprised of players from the remaining 17 teams.
The Mavericks take on the Colorado Eagles tonight for a New Year's Eve showdown and a limited number of tickets are still available for Friday's game. The Mavs will then take on the Quad City Mallards on Saturday night and tickets are available online at www.Ticketmaster.com, over the phone at (800) 745-3000 or in person at the Box Office.
