Mavs Halt Thunder in First of Three

INDEPENDENCE, MO- The Wichita Thunder lost 5-2 to the Missouri Mavericks at the Independence Events Center on Friday night.

Missouri used two early goals to take control of the game. Simon Watson scored past Kevin Beech just 1:45 into the contest, while Nick Sirota made it 2-0 at 6:58 on a deflection in front of the net. Kory Scoran helped the Thunder cut the lead in half, scoring a power play goal on a one-timer from the point setup by Andrew Martens at 16:28.

Watson scored again at 7:55 in the second, skating towards the crease and beating Beech under his left pad. In the third, Sirota became the second Mavericks player to score twice in the game, benefitting from a deflection off of Beech's skate from the red line at the 2:45 mark. Matt Robinson slapped a puck past Rob Nolan during a Thunder power play at 5:52, shooting from the left halfboards, but Todd Griffith's power play goal at 15:17 sealed the game for Missouri.

Robin Richards picked up two fighting majors in the game, squaring off with Derek Knowles in the first and Mike Wakita in the third. Daniel Tetrault also fought in the third, taking on Carlyle Lewis.

Beech was 31 of 36 in the loss. Nolan earned the win, saving 22 of 24. Wichita was 2 for 5 on the power play. Missouri was 1 for 6.
