Dayton Gems Weekend Preview
March 18, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
The Dayton Gems captured a thrilling 2-1 win over Evansville on Thursday night. Damian Surma recorded a powerplay goal with just 4:19 remaining in the game to give the Gems the win.
With the victory, Dayton was able to move ahead of Quad City in the Turner Conference standings and is now in sixth place. The Mallards and Gems both have 65 points, but Dayton is in sixth because of the better win percentage.
Dayton will now be on the road for the remainder of this weekend. The Gems will kickoff their road trip with a game in Evansville on Friday night before heading to Quad City on Saturday.
Evansville
After taking on the IceMen at Hara Arena on Thursday night, the Gems will now head to Evansville for a game on Friday night. It will be the final time these two teams face each other this season.
Prior to capturing Thursday's 2-1 win, the Gems and IceMen have had a number of close games this season. The previous four games these teams met in went into overtime or a shootout. In four of those five games, it was the Gems who came out on top.
Out of 13 games that went beyond regulation for the Gems this season, seven of them have been against the IceMen.
Quad City
This will be the first of three meetings between these two teams from now to the end of the regular season. With both teams having 65 points in the conference standings, each game between these two teams will be important.
In order for Dayton to stay ahead of the Mallards in the standings, they will have to have a better win percentage against Quad City than they have had in recent months.
Since the beginning of January, the two teams have met 7 times. The Gems are just 3-4-0 against the Mallards. If the Gems drop two of three against Quad City, their chances of holding their place in the Turner Conference standings drop as well.
The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
