Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks lost in a shootout Saturday night, 6-5, to the Arizona Sundogs in front of 5,760 fans at Independence Events Center. The Mavericks trailed the Sundogs 5-1 with 12 minutes remaining in regulation, but made a furious comeback and scored four unanswered goals to tie the game and force overtime. Jeff Christian and Jeff MacDermid each had a pair of goals for the Mavericks, and Kyle Hood tallied two goals for Arizona including the game-winner in the shootout. Missouri is now 15-16-3 overall, and lost their first shootout of the season (6-1). The Mavericks will head into the All-Star break and will not play again until Friday, January 15 against the Mississippi RiverKings at the IEC.
The Sundogs jumped out to an early lead when Torren Delforte scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season. The goal came at the 2:37 mark of the period and Joey Sides and Kyle Hood earned assists on the play. Mavericks' Captain Carlyle Lewis attempted to jump start the home team when he fought Sundogs' forward Cedric Bernier at the 8:56 mark. Lewis won the fight by knockout, but the Mavs were unable to use the momentum to their advantage and Arizona continued to lead 1-0 after one period.
MacDermid tied the game for Missouri at 2:13 of the second period when he skated into the Arizona zone along the left wing and snapped a shot near-side that beat Sundogs goaltender Kyle McNulty. Forward Simon Watson assisted MacDermid on the play. Hood tallied his first goal at the 7:35 mark on an unassisted shorthanded goal to give Arizona a 2-1 lead after two periods.
A total of seven goals were scored in the final period. Sides, Chris Bartolone and Konrad Reeder all tallied goals for Arizona in the first 6:38 of the period to give the visitors a commanding 5-1 lead. The Mavericks came storming back starting at the 8:19 mark when newcomer Braden Walls scored his first goal in a Mavericks sweater.
Missouri forward Brett Hammond took a penalty just 10 seconds later, however the home team kept the pressure during their penalty kill and scored two shorthanded goals just 22 seconds apart. MacDermid scored his second goal of the game, shorthanded, at 9:17 when he beat McNulty to the far post, and Christian scored his first of the game at 9:39 on a rebound. The two goals with a man down marked a Mavericks' team record for shorthanded goals in a game. Christian's goal cut the Arizona lead to 5-4 and he scored the equalizer with 3:16 remaining in the game on a five-on-three power play goal.
Missouri overcame the four-goal deficit to force overtime and eventually the shootout, but Hood's goal in the fifth round was the only goal in the shootout. The Mavericks had won their first six shootouts of the season and are now 6-1 in the sudden death situation.
The Mavericks are off until Friday, January 15 for the All-Star Game break. Missouri forward Jeff Christian will represent the Mavericks at the mid-season classic on Wednesday, January 13 in Laredo, Texas. The Mavericks will host the Mississippi RiverKings on Friday, January 15 and Saturday, January 16 at Independence Events Center.
