Mavs Beat Thunder For First Win

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder lost 6-1 to the Missouri Mavericks at the Kansas Coliseum on Friday night.

Mike Kneeland scored from the slot on Marc Belanger's rebound at 4:16 in the first period to give Wichita 1-0 lead. The Mavericks however went on to score six unanswered goals, including three in the third to take control of the game.

Former Thunder defenseman Andrew Davis tied the game with a high shot from the point that rang off the crossbar at 9:55 in the first. Missouri then took the lead when Bill Vandemeer scored on a wrap around to the left of Tim Boron at 11:48 in the same period. Jeff Christian, Brett Hammond, Chad Hinz, and Simon Watson all scored Missouri goals.

Wichita went 0 for 9 on the power play, including two five-on-threes of more than 50 seconds. The Thunder penalty kill went 3 for 3 and has now killed off 23 consecutive penalities.

Tim Boron took the loss, dropping to 1-2-0. Boron stopped 14 of 20 shots. Doug Groenestege saved 25 of 26 to earn the win, the first in Mavericks' franchise history.

Prior to the game, the Thunder activated defenseman Jordan Little and right wing Chris Trafford from the 14-Day IR. Wichita subsequently placed Jason Duda on the 14-Day IR and released defenseman Brett Beauchamp.
