RiverKings Short Circuit Oilers In Wild Final Period
October 30, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) --- Bobby Chaumont's shorthanded, unassisted goal with 1:48 remaining turned out to be the difference maker in the Mississippi RiverKings' 5-4 victory over the Tulsa Oilers in Central Hockey League action on Friday, October 30 in Southaven.
Chaumont's goal gave the RiverKings a 5-3 lead in a see-saw third period that ended with the home team taking its fourth win of the season (4-3-0), while dropping the Oilers' record to 3-2-0 and stopping a two-game Tulsa winning streak.
Tulsa got on the scoreboard first when Rob Hisey scored his sixth goal of the season and fourth against the RiverKings this year at 6:49 of the first period.
Ryan Held answered for the RiverKings early in the second period, followed by a power play goal from Cam Severson to give the RiverKings a 2-1 lead after two periods of action.
The Oilers scored quickly in the first minute of the final period, setting the stage for a high-scoring final twenty minutes that had both teams score three times each. Hisey netted his second goal of the game and seventh of the year at 36 seconds of the session for a 2-2 tie.
But, Severson quickly answered with his second goal of the night and fourth of the year at 2:17 to give the RiverKings back their one-goal lead at 3-2.
Former RiverKing Aaron Davis tied things up again with a power play goal for Tulsa at 11:03, but Ryan Campbell responded with a power play goal at 12:47 to return the one goal margin in favor of Mississippi.
That's when Chaumont gave the RiverKings a two-goal cushion with his shorthanded heroics, but Michel Beausoleil still answered that with a power play goal for Tulsa, but it came with only 2.9 seconds remaining in the game.
Mississippi outshot the Oilers for the game 41-31. Winning goaltender Ray Jean stopped 27 shots in posting the victory (4-1-0). Kevin Armstrong took the loss with a 36-save, five goal effort for the Oilers.
Tulsa finished the game 3-for-7 on the power play, while the RiverKings scored twice in eight chances.
Up next, the RiverKings host another Northern Conference rival in Bossier-Shreveport on Saturday afternoon, October 31, starting at 3:05 PM in Southaven.
The RiverKings will wear special occasion jerseys which will be auctioned off at the conclusion of the game. The money raised from the auction will go to the Jr. StreetKings youth roller hockey program. Fans are encouraged to come in costume for a costume contest with prizes being given to the winners. And, there will be a post-game skate for the fans at the conclusion of the game.
