Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Texas Brahmas scored two goals in a 35-second span of the third period to break a 3-3 tie and go on to defeat the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 6-4 on Friday night at the CenturyTel Center. Joe Zappala got the 'Bugs back within one goal in the final minutes, but Bossier-Shreveport would get no closer and fell to 2-3-0 on the season.

Brett Smith and Zappala each had a goal and an assist for the Mudbugs, who lost at home for the third consecutive game. AJ Gale led the way for Texas with three points, including the game-winning goal.

The 'Bugs started off the scoring early on when Tyler Liebel put home a great cross-ice feed from Joe Blaznek to give Bossier-Shreveport the 1-0 lead just 3:20 into the contest. Texas would counter on the powerplay with a Jason Deitsch goal to tie it and then take a 2-1 lead when Dan Welch netted his first goal as a Brahma later in the period.

The teams traded scoring chances in the second period before the Mudbugs tied it back up at the 12:34 mark. Brett Smith picked up a Texas turnover right in front of the net and fired his second goal of the year past Joe Palmer to make it a 2-2 game after forty minutes of play.

The Brahmas re-took the lead in the third when rookie Lee Jubinville scored at 4:57, but the 'Bugs again fought back when Joe Ori made a great play to set up Shawn Limpright's first goal as a Mudbug just over two minutes later. With the game tied mid-way through the third, Texas defenseman Justin Kinnunen fired a long shot on goal from center ice that found its way into the top corner to put the Brahmas back on top 4-3. Gale scored 35 seconds later on a breakaway to extend the lead to 5-3.

Zappala's powerplay goal came right off a faceoff win by Smith and brought the 'Bugs back within one goal with 1:47 remaining. Tyler Skworchinski then capped off the Texas victory with an empty-net goal to provide the final scoring margin of 6-4.

Ken Carroll drops to 0-2 on the season in defeat despite making 28 saves. Joe Palmer stopped 30 shots in his first win of the season. The 'Bugs finished 1 for 5 on the powerplay, while Texas converted 1 of 2 chances. Both teams finished the night with 34 shots on goal.

Tomorrow the Mudbugs will be on the road for the third consecutive Saturday to play their first conference game of the season at Mississippi. The Mudbugs and RiverKings will drop the puck at 3:05 pm in this Halloween showdown, which is the first meeting this year between the two rivals. The game will not be covered live on the radio, but will be shown live online on CHL TV.
