Laredo, TX 10/30/09 - The Laredo Bucks were too much for the Amarillo Gorillas, handing the Gorillas a 5-2 loss Friday night.
The first period favored the home team as Laredo notched the game's first three goals. Former Laredo Rookie of the Year and team MVP Darryl Smith along with defensemen Jarred Mohr and Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel contributed to give the Bucks the 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The middle frame was also not kind to Amarillo, as Laredo would score once more. At the 12:43 mark, forward Jeff Bes deflected a feed from captain Adam Rivet on the power-play into the near side of the net for a four-nothing Laredo lead. After two periods of play, Laredo 4 Amarillo 0.
The Gorillas made a final push in the third period when forward Joe Guenther netted his eighth and ninth goals on the year to cut the Laredo lead in half with 15:03 to play. Amarillo couldn't covert on late power-play opportunities, but Laredo could. Darryl Smith would earn his second goal of the game ceiling the deal for the Bucks with less than three minutes to play. Final score Laredo 5 Amarillo 2.
Amarillo remains winless in regulation all-time in Laredo 0-8-1.the Gorillas' power-play didn't covert (0-5), snapping a four-game power-play goal streak.Laredo broke their 5-game home winless streak.Joe Guenther earned the 3rd star of the game.
Six-time CHL "Mascot of the Year" Stomp will host his annual "Breakfast with Stomp" tomorrow, October 31st from 9am-11am at The Back Porch Restaurant. The Gorillas will hop on the bus to Rio Grande Valley tonight in order to play the Killer Bees Saturday, October 31st at 1pm (1440 AM ESPN Radio & CHL-TV beginning at 12:55pm CST).
