Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks edged the Wichita Thunder 4-3 on Saturday night to capture a win in their last regular season game against their Independence Cup rival.

The Thunder leapt onto the scoreboard with a penalty shot and another quick goal in the first 5 minutes of play to take a significant 2-0 lead over the Mavericks. Wichita made it difficult for the Mavs to generate much in their attacking zone, and held Missouri to just 2 shots on goal through the start of the game. It was rookie forward Tyler Currier who would break the hold of the Thunder for the Mavs, netting his first professional goal and first goal as a Missouri Maverick.

Trailing 2-1 to the visiting team heading into the 2nd period, the Mavericks wrestled with the Thunder through almost the entire frame before another tally was added to the contest. Sebastien Thinel, taking a quick feed from Andrew Courtney, was perfectly placed in front of the Wichita net to get a shot past goaltender David Brown to give the Mavericks the equalizer 2-2 with 1:15 left in the period.

The team captain would strike again in the third period for the Mavs, this time with an assist from Dave Pszenyczny to edge the Thunder 3-2 with a short-handed goal midway through the final 20 minutes. Then Evan Vossen picked up speed to swing around the Wichita net and send a pass to a waiting Colton Hayes high along the right boards who launched a rocket of a shot into the Thunder net to expand the Mavs lead 4-2.

With less than a minute in the game, goaltender David Brown was pulled for the Thunder extra attacker and Wichita was able to overwhelm the Mavs' net and score to come within one. Missouri held onto their lead for the final 20 seconds and skated away with a 4-3 victory.

The Mavericks play their next home game on Friday, March 7th at the Independence Events Center against the Allen Americans at 7:05pm. There will be a specialty jersey auction benefitting Folds of Honor directly following the game on March 7th in sections 101 and 102.
