Tulsa Oilers News Release
ST. CHARLES, MO - The calendar may have changed from February to March but the result stayed the same for the Tulsa Oilers. After cruising through February with a 9-1-0 record, the Oilers began the final month of the regular season with a 4-2 victory over the St. Charles Chill on Saturday night in front of 3,223 at Family Arena. Tulsa has won nine of its last ten games and earned its sixth straight road triumph.
The Chill put the Oilers on their heels in the first period as Kyle O'Kane jammed home a rebound at 5:29 and Martin Hlinka one-timed a power play shot past Shane Madolora at 13:06 to provide the home side with a 2-0 cushion. St. Charles' goaltender Robby Moss was outstanding in the opening 20 minutes and turned aside 13 Oilers shots including several from close range.
Moss kept the Oilers off the board until 9:42 of the second period when Ryan Menei slapped a pass from Ben Gordon inside the near post for his 11th goal of the season. Exactly four minutes later, with Tulsa defenseman Eric Tallent in the box for cross-checking, Oilers center Kyle Bochek finished off a shorthanded breakaway by chipping a shot over the sprawling Moss. Bochek's 15th of the year leveled the game at 2-2 and gave the Oilers their eighth shorthanded goal of the season.
The contest remained deadlocked at deuces until the 12:03 mark of the third period. Ryan Menei lofted a lead pass through the neutral zone and rookie winger Blair Macaulay sped underneath the bouncing puck to create a breakaway. The Winnipeg native rifled a shot over the glove of Moss to give the visitors their first lead of the evening. Less than two minutes later, Menei recorded his third point of the contest by roofing a power play shot over Moss and underneath the crossbar. The Oilers outshot the Chill 18-8 over the final period and won for the sixth time this season when trailing after one period.
Tulsa improved to 4-0-0 this season against St. Charles and is now six games above .500 (29-23-3) for the first time this season. Madolora ended the night with 33 saves and his eighth straight victory while Gordon, who put up 22 points in 10 games in February, continued his scorching scoring pace by dishing out four assists.
The Oilers will enjoy six days off before returning home on Friday, March 7 to take on the Rapid City Rush.
