Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Scott Howes scored his second goal of the night with just 53 seconds left in regulation to snap a 5-5 tie and give the Brampton Beast a wild 6-5 win over the host Quad City Mallards Saturday night . With the victory the Beast (29-21-5, 61 points) completed a two-game weekend sweep of the Mallards, extended its winning streak to five games and dropped Quad City (26-17-8, 60 points) into seventh place in the Central Hockey League.
Howes crashed the net to score the late winner after the Mallards had erased a 5-3 deficit with a pair of goals earlier in the third. Vladimir Nikiforov's power play tip-in cut the gap to a single goal at 4:24 of the final frame and set the stage for Jeff Lee- who finished with four points after also piling up three assists- to dash across the Brampton goalmouth and even the score at 13:16.
The Beast's five-goal second period explosion left the Mallards in need of a third period rally. The Mallards entered the second on top 2-0, but that lead quickly evaporated. Howes's drive from the top of the left wing circle got Brampton on the scoreboard just 75 seconds into the second. A little more than two and a half minutes later- at the 2:36 mark- Andrew Fournier tied the score from the doorstep as Mallard goaltender Ty Rimmer scrambled back into his crease in an unsuccessful bid to keep the puck out. Just past the midway point of the period Calin Wild score twice in 15 seconds to first give the Beast a 3-2 lead and then send Rimmer to the bench. Wild snapped the tie breaker past the onrushing Rimmer from the slot at 10:59. At 11:14 he buried Thomas Stajan's centering pass to widen the margin to 4-2. After that goal Thomas Heemskerk replaced Rimmer in the Mallard crease. The Mallards battled back to within one just a minute and 47 seconds after Wild's second when Thomas Frazee scored his second goal of the game on a 2-on-1 rush at 13:01. However, 44 seconds later the Beast reestablished their two goal cushion when Steve Makway converted a 2-on-1 at the other end.
The Mallards' Justin Fox opened the scoring from close range just two minutes and 12 seconds into the game. Frazee extended the lead to 2-0 at 12:27 of the first period with a one timer from the slot but the Mallards would soon enough face a dramatic reversal of fortune.
