Mavericks Comeback for 3-2 Shootout Win over IceRays

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Missouri Mavericks scored a goal in the third period to force overtime and eventually beat the Corpus Christi IceRays, 3-2, in a shootout Saturday night. Brett Hammond and Jeff Christian scored goals in regulation and Bill Vandermeer earned the game winner in the shootout to give the Mavericks their second straight win on the road. Missouri (10-11-1) heads home for a game Tuesday, December 15 against the Rapid City Rush at Independence Events Center.

"The result is what we needed," said Mavericks Head Coach Scott Hillman. "The two goals we gave up were mistakes, but we found a way to win and earned four important points this weekend."

Missouri is now 4-0 in shootouts this season and goaltender Doug Groenestege is 3-0 in shootouts stopping 15 of 17 shots overall.

After a scoreless opening 15 minutes, Hammond scored for Missouri at the 15:16 mark on an even-strength goal. He was assisted by Vandermeer and Christian, but the lead only lasted 60 seconds. Adam Powell netted his fifth goal of the season at 16:16 on an assist from Jason Tessier to make it 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Jereme Tendler made it a 2-1 lead for Corpus Christi with just 1:10 remaining in the second period. His 11th goal of the season was assisted by Ryan Bennett and Matt Smyth. Corpus Christi headed into the final period with the one-goal lead and had earned 16 of a possible 19 points when leading after two periods.

It was Christian who tied the game at two at the 4:20 mark of the final period when he netted his ninth goal of the season. Jared Lavender earned his second pro assist on the goal, and the team's remained tied through regulation and overtime.

Vandermeer was the only player to score a goal in the shootout and he gave the Mavericks the 3-2 victory.

Groenestege stopped all five in the shootout and improve to 7-4-0 on the season.

Missouri's next game is Tuesday, December 15 against the Rapid City Rush at 7:05 p.m. at Independence Events Center. It is a Price Chopper "Two-for-Tuesday" game in which fans can purchase one terrace or club level ticket and get one free.
