LOWELL, MASS (March 28, 2010) - The Sound Tigers stopped their two-game skid with an important 4-2 victory over the Lowell Devils. Greg Mauldin scored the game winner, while Nathan Lawson stopped 33 shots to earn his 15th win of the season.
The first period started off like last night's contest in Hartford, as the Devils pressured deep in the Sound Tigers' zone. Lawson though, turned away nine Devil shots, to keep them off the board.
The Sound Tigers opened the scoring on the power play for the game's first tally with 4:44 left in the first. Lowell defenseman Matt Taormina was sent to the box for slashing at the 14:44 mark, and the Sound Tigers capitalized on the man advantage. Mike Radja deposited his 11th goal on the season, blasting a slap shot over the shoulder of Devils' goalie Mike McKenna. Sound Tigers' defensemen Brett Motherwell dropped the puck off to Radja, who was at the top of the right circle where he slapped the puck on net. Sound Tigers' forward Matt Martin used his size to screen McKenna and the puck whistled past the Lowell goalie to give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 edge.
Momentum carried over for the Sound Tigers in period two, as Robin Figren scored his third goal of the year just 2:43 in, to double the score at 2-0. Sound Tigers' captain Mark Wotton hit forward Pascal Morency with a long seam pass at the Devils' blue line. Morency picked up on Figren's presence and dropped him the puck along the right boards. Figren busted around the Devils' defense and made a beautiful move on McKenna. The crafty rookie brought the puck to his backhand, and then quickly switched back to his forehand before he slammed the puck into the net.
Lowell would continue to sustain their attack on Lawson and finally would get one past him with 13:34 remaining in the middle frame.
The play wound up deep in the Sound Tigers' territory where Devils' forward Louis Robitaille controlled it the puck on the far sideboard. Robitaille fed line-mate Brad Mills with a pass in the slot, where he quickly snapped the puck off his stick. Lawson came out to challenge the shot, however the puck was already past his glove and in the back of the net. For Mills, the goal was his 10th goal of the season and pulled the Devils within one at 2-1.
The Devils tied it up in the third period on Michael Swift's 21st of the year. With Sound Tiger defenseman Dustin Friesen in the box for tripping, Lowell went on their third power play of the game.
The puck was sent deep behind the Sound Tigers' end, and former Sound Tiger Ben Walter hit Swift in the slot with a pass. Swift snapped the puck past the blocker of Lawson on the far side to tie the game at 2-2, with 16:45 left in the game.
Mauldin was there to provide the eventual game-winning goal at the 8:50 mark. Line-mate Jesse Joensuu found Mauldin in the slot, and he roofed the puck past McKenna's blocker side. The goal was Mauldin's team leading 24th tally of the season and gave the Sound Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Sean Bentivoglio provided the insurance on a breakaway goal with only 1:17 remaining in regulation. The Sound Tigers caught Lowell on a bad line-change, and Matt Martin found Bentivoglio all alone in the neutral zone. Bentivoglio went to his backhand and stuffed the puck past the outstretched left pad of McKenna, to give the Sound Tigers a 4-2 advantage.
Lawson made 33 saves to earn his 15th win of the season, as the Sound Tigers picked up two critical points and see their record improve to 36-29-4-6. McKenna made 30 stops in the loss, and the Devils drop to 35-30-4-6.
The Sound Tigers head to Manchester to take on the Monarchs on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and then return home on April 3rd as they host the Portland Pirates at 7 pm.
