Bowie Baysox News Release

BOWIE, Md. - Orioles left-handed starting pitcher Brian Matusz is Eastern League Player of the Month and the Orioles Pitcher of the Month for July. Matusz was also the Orioles Pitcher of the Month in June.

The Orioles first round draft pick in the 2008 First Year Player Draft made five starts for the Baysox in July, and won each of them. The starts included four scoreless outings and a one-run game. Matusz threw his first professional shutout July 2, against Southern Division leading Akron, holding the Aeros to four hits over 7.0 innings. He was even better in his next start, holding the Harrisburg Senators to one hit over 8.0 innings while striking out 11 on July 7. Matusz tallied a 1.85 ERA in July and struck out 30 batters while only walking six in 34.0 innings.

Matusz was recalled by Baltimore on Aug. 4, and made his major league debut that night in Detroit. He held the Tigers to one run over 5.0 innings to record his first major league victory. Between Frederick, Bowie and Baltimore, Matusz has won his last 10 decisions. He is scheduled to start for Baltimore on Sunday, Aug. 9, against Toronto's Roy Halladay.
