Mandel Outstanding but Sens Fall 1-0
August 7, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release
Jeff Mandel was outstanding for a third straight start for the Sens, but the offense didn't make the trip to Trenton and dropped a 1-0 game to the Thunder. Trenton scored the games only run in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off single off the bat of Chris Malec.
Jeff Mandel started and pitched eight shut out innings for the Sens. He retired the side in order in three of the eight innings, and faced the minimum three hitters in an inning a total of five times. Trenton had a lead off double in the second, but he pitched around it. In the fourth, Leonard Davis made a great diving catch in left field that turned into a double play. He finished his outing by striking out Justin Cooper, his fourth strikeout, to end the eighth inning. Mandel allowed three hits, walked two and struck out four in the game.
Meanwhile the Sens did even less against Trenton starter Ryan Pope. He pitched eight innings and allowed just two hits, a one-out double by Bill Rhinehart in the second and a two-out infield single off the bat of Francisco Plasencia in the eighth. Pope finished with a season-high 11 strikeouts and didn't walk a batter.
Carlos Martinez pitched the ninth for the Sens and allowed a lead off single to Austin Krum, who was then sacrificed to second before scoring on the single by Malec.
The Sens have dropped three straight, are now 50-60 on the season while Trenton retains their grip on second place in the Northern Division, and are 55-56. Saturday night the teams play a doubleheader that gets started at 6:05pm. LH Matt Chico is going in game one for the Sens and RH Luis Atilano in game two.
