August 7, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton First baseman Chris Malec connected on the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Thunder to a 1-0 shutout win over Harrisburg on Friday night. Trenton has now won three of its last four games. The 1:58 game-time was Trenton's shortest of the season.

Trenton (55-56) scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Center fielder Austin Krum led off the frame with a single against Harrisburg Reliever Carlos Martinez (6-5). A sacrifice bunt by Shortstop Eduardo Nunez moved Krum to second base. Malec followed with the game-winning RBI single to center field to plate Krum. Trenton Reliever Wilkins Arias (2-3) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief in the ninth inning.

The 1-0 win was Trenton's first 1-0 win since June 12th vs. Binghamton at Waterfront Park. The shutout was Trenton's 14th of the season, which ties Bowie for the Eastern League lead in that category. The walk-off win was Trenton's first since a 2-1 win over Portland at Waterfront Park on July 19th.

Trenton Starting Pitcher Ryan Pope hurled eight shutout innings and received a no-decision. The eight innings tied his season-high for longest outing of the season. He yielded only two hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters. The 11 strikeouts was the most for a Thunder Starting Pitcher in a game this season. He retired 19 in a row during a stretch between the second inning and eighth inning. Pope last threw eight shutout innings at New Hampshire on July 22nd. Harrisburg Starting Pitcher Jeff Mandel tossed eight shutout innings and allowed only three hits. He struck out four and walked two.

Trenton and Harrisburg will play a double-header on Saturday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton's Starting Pitcher in the first game is TBD. In the second game, RHP Jason Stephens (1-0, 2.86) will start for Trenton. Harrisburg LHP Matt Chico (2-3, 4.45) will start for the Senators in the first game, and RHP Luis Atilano (6-7, 4.53) will start for the Senators in the second game. Both games will be seven-inning contests. Game time is set for the first game at 6:05 p.m.
