Connecticut Defenders News Release
ERIE, PA- The Connecticut Defenders began the weekend on the right foot with a 6-4 come from behind victory over the Erie Seawolves at Jerry Uht Park Friday night.
With one out and 3B-Brad Boyer on third base in the eighth inning, 1B-Brett Pill smacked a broken bat RBI single to give Connecticut the final lead of the night and snapped a two game losing streak.
Connecticut took an early lead in the second. After loading the bases, DH-Ramon Castro hit a one hopper to 1B-Shawn Roof who tried to turn two but SS-Cale Iorg's throw back to first was wide allowing two runs to come in. C-Jackson Williams then ripped an RBI double to the alleyway in right centerfield to complete a three run inning.
The Seawolves clawed their way back in the third with a two RBI double to left center by 2B-Danny Worth and cut the lead to one.
Erie eventually tied things up at 3-3 in the fourth after back to back doubles put runners in scoring position and DH-Andy Dirks lifted a sac fly to deep center.
Defenders' starter LHP-Madision Bumgarner left after the fifth allowing the three runs-two earned off of just four hits, walked three and fanned five in the no decision.
Both teams traded zeros until the seventh where CF-Casper Wells hit a solo opposite field homerun over the right field wall to give the Seawolves a 4-3 edge and welcome Defenders' reliever Dan Runzler to Double-A.
Down by one in the eighth, Boyer who was inserted as a defensive replacement for Mike McBryde in the sixth pulled a game tying RBI triple (6) down the right-field line to plate 2B-Brock Bond who drew a one out walk. After Pill's RBI single, Connecticut added an insurance run when Pill scored on a SS-Brandon Crawford RBI groundout.
After the homer, Runzler (1-0) settled in and earned his first win tossing 1.2 innings of work and struck out one. Seawolves' starter LHP-Jon Kibler (6-7) claimed the loss allowing five earned runs off of five hits, walked three and fanned a pair in 7.1 innings.
Both teams will meet again tomorrow in game two of the three game series from Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA at 7:05pm. The matchup has Defenders' RHP-Garrett Broshuis (3-2) tossing against Erie's RHP-Pat Stanley (5-4).
