JACKSONVILLE, FL - John Matulia homered twice and knocked in five as the Biscuits (8-8) held off the Jacksonville Suns (5-10) to take the series-opener 6-3 Friday at The Baseball Grounds.

After a solo-shot in the second began the scoring, Matulia cranked a two-out grand slam on a 3-2 pitch in the third to make it 5-0. The Biscuits would get all their scoring on the long ball, with a John Shelby homer in the ninth completing the production.

All three runs for the Suns were unearned against Biscuits starter Nick Barnese (4-3), with a two-out error in the fourth plating the first run and opening the door for a two-run homer from Paul Gran on the next pitch.

Barnese allowed only four hits over six innings to get the win. Jacksonville starter Jose Alvarez (0-1) allowed five runs on eight hits over six innings in the loss. Zach Quate (12) walked a pair in the ninth but got leadoff man Kevin Mattison to pop out to left to lock things down.

The Biscuits have now won four of five overall, and six of seven against the Suns.

RHP Jim Paduch will throw for the Biscuits in game two Saturday against RHP Omar Poveda. First pitch is set for 5:05.
