Mobile, AL - In a meeting between the top two teams in the Southern League South, the Mobile BayBears halted the Mississippi Braves 14-9 on Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium to tighten their early grip on the division.

Ed Easley drove in six runs on the night, belting a first-inning grand slam, his third home run of the season to stake the BayBears (12-4, 50-36) out to a 6-0 lead. He came through twice more, ripping RBI doubles in the third and fifth inning to put more distance between the two teams.

The Braves (8-8, 33-53) played catch-up all night but just couldn't overcome the Mobile head-start.

Paul Clemens allowed eight earned runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings, suffering the loss to fall to 6-5 on the year. Kyler Newby earned his fifth win in six decisions this season, allowing five runs on seven hits over 5 2/3.

Willie Cabrera hit his third homer of the year, a solo shot in the second to put Mississippi on the board. Cory Harrilchak finished the night 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Donell Linares also had three hits on the night, scoring twice and driving in one.

The Mississippi Braves and Mobile BayBears meet for game two of the four-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 PM. Kenshin Kawakami (2-3, 5.81) toes the rubber for the Braves against Mobile left-hander Tom Layne (1-0, 1.59).
