Barons swing past Generals

JACKSON, TENN. - Birmingham jumped out of the gate Friday night to a 4-0 lead in the first three innings and coasted to a 9-5 victory in the series opener at Pringles Park. The Barons blasted two homeruns and scored their nine runs on 13 hits. The Generals dropped to 5-11 on the second half and are 43-43 overall, at .500 for the first time since April 29th (10-10).

The Barons two long balls came from Kenny Williams Jr. (3), a 2-run shot in the second inning and Brandon Short (10) hit a solo homerun in the eighth inning. Joe Dunigan (4) blasted a solo shot for Jackson in the fifth inning. Seth Loman was 3-for-5, scoring two times. Alden Carrithers, Jason Bour and Kyle Shelton added two hits each for the Barons. Brandon Bantz provided the Generals only multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3.

The loss was given to Mauricio Robles (0-1) in his first Generals start after making four starts for Advanced Class-A High Desert. Robles worked 3.2 innings before getting the hook, giving up four runs on five hits, striking out three and walking four. Birmingham starter Cameron Bayne (2-0) held the Generals hitless until the fourth inning. In Bayne's third Double-A start he gave up two runs on four hits, striking out two and walking four.

The closest Jackson got on Friday night was when Joe Dunigan belted the solo homerun in the fifth, trimming the lead to 5-2. The Barons went on to score three runs in the seventh inning to pull away to 8-2.

Brandon Bantz scored on a wild pitch in the and Brandon Haveman brought in James McOwen, cutting the lead to 8-4. Jackson made the score 8-5 by scoring a run on a Carlos Triunfel double. Birmingham added their final run in the ninth to win the game 9-5.

Saturday night the Generals continue the four-game series at Pringles Park against the Barons, with game time set for 6:05 PM. RHP Steven Hensley (0-4, 4.73) makes the start for Jackson against RHP Nevin Griffith (5-4, 6.01) for Birmingham. The game can be heard on Jackson's NewsTalk 101.5 FM and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com
