
Barons Conquer Generals, 9-5

Hoover, AL - Brandon Short and Kenny Williams, Jr. each homered as Birmingham Barons (8-8, 48-38) conquered the Jackson Generals (5-11, 43-43), 9-4, in front of 1,611 fans Friday night at Jackson's Pringles Park.
In the top of the first inning the Barons jumped to an early 2-0 lead when Jason Bour lined a leadoff single to right field and trotted home on Williams, Jr.'s third home run of th season.
Birmingham added a pair of runs in the third frame after Jose Martinez singled, Josh Phegley was hit by a pitch and Seth Loman singled that loaded the bases. With the sacks packed, back-to-back walks to Bour and Shelton delivered Martinez and Phegley as the Barons seized a four-run advantage, 4-0.
The Generals began their scoring in the fourth inning when Vincent Catricala was hit by a pitch with two outs, stole second base and scored on a RBI single to right field by Rich Poythress as Jackson's deficit shrank to three, 4-1.
Loman lined a double to center field that began the top of the fifth inning and raced to third on Bour's single to left field. Kyle Shelton lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Loman and gave the Barons a four-run edge, 5-1.
Joe Dunigian's leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Generals their second run of the game, 5-2.
In the top of the seventh, Loman lined a leadoff single and reached second after Bour drew a walk. Following a RBI single by Shelton to right field that plated Loman, the play allowed Bour to race to third base. Williams, Jr. added a sacrifice fly that drove in Bour while Shelton sprinted to third base. Alden Carrithers lined a RBI single up the middle that drove home Shelton for the third run of the stanza, 8-2.
Brandon Bantz smacked a leadoff single to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning. After a throwing error by Carrithers at second base that allowed James McOwen to reach second and Bantz advance to third base, a wild pitch uncorked by Barons reliever Brian Omogrosso allowed Bantz to score and McOwen race to third. A groundout by Brandon Haveman plated McOwen as the Barons' advantage reduced to four, 8-4.
A leadoff solo home run by Short in the top of the eighth inning gave the Barons a five-run edge, 9-4.
Jackson added one run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Dunigan drew a two-out walk and sprinted around the bases on Carlos Triunfel's RBI double, 9-5.
Cameron Bayne (2-0) earned the victory after the right-hander yielded two earned runs on 4 hits, 4 walks and 2 strikeouts in 6.0 IP.
Mauricio Robles (0-1) tossed 3.2 IP and surrendered four earned runs on 5 hits, 4 walks and 3 strikeouts.
The Barons and Generals continue their four-game series with game two set for Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Birmingham hands the ball to right-hander Nevin Griffith (5-4, 6.01) while Jackson counters with right-hander Steven Hensley (0-4, 4.73).
