
Mathes Remains Perfect as Freedom Get Past RiverHawks

Loves Park, IL-Brandon Mathes pitched 8 effective innings leading the Florence Freedom(43-37)to a 5-2 win Wednesday over the Rockford RiverHawks(34-46)at RiverHawks Stadium. Mathes improved to 3-0 as he struck out a season high 8 batters as the Freedom leveled their three game series at a game apiece with the RiverHawks.
The Freedom offense produced four of their five runs with two outs. In the 2nd, Kyle Bluestein drew a walk, stole second base, and later scored on a Pierre LePage single giving the Feredom a 1-0 lead. In the 5th, Drew Rundle drove an RBI double to left center to put the Freedom up 2-0. In the 7th, the Freedom had the bases loaded as Rundle was at the plate. He worked a 3-2 count and drew a walk which forced home David Harris for a 3-0 advantage. The Freedom expanded their lead in the 8th as Bluestein led off with a walk. John Malloy then executed a sacrifice bunt putting him in scoring position. Two batters later with two outs, Harris ripped an RBI double scoring Bluestein. Junior Arrojo followed with an RBI single scoring Harris for a 5-0 lead.
Mathes didn't allow a run until the 8th inning. With one out, Matt Greener singled, Jet Butler walked, and Trevor Whyte singled. Greg Van Horn then grounded out to third base scoring Greener to get Rockford on the scoreboard. Butler later scored in the inning off a passed ball by catcher Jim Jacquot.
The RiverHawks threatened in the 9th against Jorge Marban as they brought the tying runner to the plate. With runners at first and second base, with one out, Marban induced a 6-4-3 double play out of Michael Hur to end the game. It was Marban's 7th save of the season. Harris went 1-3 with 3 runs scored and an RBI, while Arrojo and Jacquot each contributed two hits apiece.
The Freedom go for the series win Thursday night against Rockford. LHP Andres Caceres(7-3, 4.26) will start for the Freedom while RHP Kyle Schpel(3-4, 2.41) starts for the RiverHawks. The game can be heard starting at 7:50 with Steve Jarnicki on Real Talk 1160 AM and realtalk1160.com.
