Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (35-45) @ TRAVERSE CITY BEACH BUMS (52-28)

Thursday, August 16 - 6:05 p.m. CT

Wuerfel Park - Traverse City, MI

Game #81 - Road Game #39 (35-45), (17-21)

RHP #30 Jacob Sanchez (4-1, 1.61 ERA) vs. RHP #25 Jacob Clem (6-4, 2.77 ERA)

Last time out...

Joliet lost 9-1 last night. After their 18-1 slugfest win on Tuesday, the Bums lineup kept rolling and scored in the first. Ryan Still led off the inning with a triple, and Brian Heere slapped an RBI single to take the lead. They added three more in the second off run-scoring singles by Marcus Nidiffer and Still, and they tacked on three in the fourth to make it 6-0. Joliet finally got on the board in the fifth when Eric McGee went yard to pull within five, but that was the closest the Slammers would get. The Bums went on to score three more in the seventh when Nidiffer launched a three-run homer to give the game its final 9-1 score, and Nidiffer notched his ninth RBI of the series. Steven Maxwell struggled in the start, surrendering six runs and ten hits through four innings in the loss. Chase Doremus, Brian Smith, Geoff Brown, and Daniel Carela all contributed in relief.

For Starters...

Jacob Sanchez is coming off an outstanding outing against the Rockford RiverHawks on August 10. He went seven shutout innings, scattering seven hits, walking three and striking out three. He has gone at least five innings in every start for the Slammers and has not allowed more than three runs in a game. This is the first time he's faced Traverse City. Sanchez was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012. Sanchez finished the 2012 Iowa Wesleyan season with a 10-2 record and a 2.42 earned run average, including 111 strikeouts, 12 walks, 71 hits allowed and 28 runs allowed (25 earned) in 93 innings pitched. He led the MCC in strikeouts and innings pitched, was second in wins and third in earned run average and opponents' batting average (.208). Sanchez obliterated the Iowa Wesleyan single season strikeout record, becoming the first player in school history to go over 100 K's in a season, and also tied the school record for wins in a season. He also was a recipient of a Gold Glove award with one error in 29 chances in the field.

Outscored...

The Slammers have been outscored by a margin of 25 runs (27-2) in the first two games of this series with Traverse City, the most they've been outscored over a span of two games this season.

Trying to avoid the sweep...

The Slammers are trying to avoid being swept for the third time on the road this season and sixth time overall in 2012.

Workhorse...

Rookie left-hander Geoff Brown continues to have an impressive season as he made his league-leading 39th appearance of the season out of the bullpen last night. Brown currently sports a 3.65 ERA in 37 innings with 40 strike outs.

In the finale...

The Slammers are 12-14 this season in series finales.

Netzel heating up...

Brad Netzel is currently working on a 10-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 23 of the team's past 25 games. He has four of the five hits in this current series for Joliet and is hitting .386 during his current 10-game hitting streak.

Five or more...

Joliet 22-11 when scoring 5 or more runs in a game. They are 13-34 when scoring fewer than 5 runs.

Walk this way...

Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 50 walks this season, good for 5th in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 33 times in 274 at bats.

Error indicator...

Joliet is 11-32 in games when they make an error. They are 24-13 in games when they do not.
