Mateychuk Chasing Warriors History

November 6, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Denton Mateychuk is making history for the Moose Jaw Warriors in the team's 40th season.

With a goal in the third period on Sunday, the Warriors captain moved into fifth all-time for points by a defenceman, passing Josh Brook, with 158 career points.

The Warriors' all-time leader in points by a defenceman is Nathan Paetsch, who finished his Western Hockey League career with 212 points, which just 54 points ahead of Mateychuk.

Mateychuk now sits five points behind Lyle Odelein, a Conexus Warriors & Legends Hall of Fame inductee, for fourth place.

He trails Chris Armstrong, another hall of fame inductee, by 34 points for third place; Scott Schoneck, who is also in the Warriors hall of fame, sits in second place and is 51 points ahead of Mateychuk.

In his fourth season with the Warriors, Mateychuk is putting together his best season to date.

The Columbus Blue Jackets first round pick is averaging 1.64 points per game, which is second among defenceman in the WHL. He has four goals and 18 points in 11 games so far this season.

That's up from the 1.03 points per game that he averaged during the 2022-23 season when he set a career-high with 65 points in 63 games.

Mateychuk and the Warriors return to game action coming up on Thursday when they host the Brandon Wheat Kings at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.
