Hawks in the Community - October
November 6, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Throughout the 2023-24 season, Winterhawks.com will feature monthly recaps of the organization's efforts to connect with and support the greater Portland community, as well as a look ahead at what's to come. Hockey is officially here, and we're proud to be a year-round staple of the Rose City and can't wait to see you all at an upcoming event!
Boys and Girls Club of Portland Metropolitan - Wattles Boys and Girls Club
The Hawks opened up the 2023-24 season with our friends at the Boys and Girls Club on September 11th. The team worked with the kids and taught them how to play hockey. The team had a blast teaching drills, skills, and of course some fun scrimmaging at the end. Thank you to our amazing partners at the Boys and Girls Club for hosting us and we are looking forward to future events!
Oregon Army National Guard
The following day the Hawks visited our partners at The Oregon Army National Guard and the Oregon Army Museum in Clackamas. The team got a tour of the museum and the grounds and ended the day with some street hockey. Thank you to the Oregon Army National Guard for hosting us this year!
Mitch Carter Charter School Visit
On October 4th, the Portland Winterhawks players and staff had a visit from Mitch Carter Charter School at the VMC. The elementary school brought 40 students to the rink for a tour, Q&A session, and meet and greet with the players after practice. This opportunity allowed the students to ask questions and explore the possibilities of working in sports. Thank you to the students and teachers at Mitch Carter Charter School for visiting!
Boys and Girls Club of Portland Metropolitan - Blazers Boys and Girls Club
To end the month of October, the team went back to the Blazers Boys and Girls Club for an educational class put on by the club staff. The team started out playing freeze tag with the kids and then headed into the classroom to go through what a normal day looks like at the club. The staff gave multiple life lessons that included real-life examples and participation from everyone. This event allowed the team to make a difference in the lives of those in their community and see the impact their work has on the lives of others. Thank you to the Boys and Girls Club for hosting!
What's Next?
November is full of hockey and more community events!
The team will listen to various guest speakers, host elementary schools at the rink for a visit, kick off a Tom's Tykes fall session, and participate in our annual 'Shop with a Hawk' event. We are looking forward to it!
