MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Victor Mateo (8-3) and Matt Ramsey (4) combine to shutout the Mobile BayBears (43-29/1-2) in a 1-0 win for the Biscuits (37-36/2-1) on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Mateo, with the help of two double plays, never allowed more than four batters in one inning until the sixth. After two fly outs, Sean Jamieson sinlged, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Tom Belza worked a walk to put runners on the corners with two outs in a scoreless game. Jake Lamb popped out to short to end the threat.
Mateo finished by going eight innings for the win. It is the first time Mateo has thrown at least eight innings in a start since his no-hitter in August of last year.
Ramsey came in to pitch a drama-filled ninth inning. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, Dustin Martin hit a grounder to first that resulted in a rundown between third and home. The Biscuits tagged out Tom Belza but runners still ended up on second and third. Ramsey then struck out Jon Griffin followed by a walk to Gerson Montilla to load the bases. With a 1-2 count, Ramsey struck out Garrett Weber on a high fastball to end the game and pick up his fourth save.
The Biscuits scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning when Jake Hager led off the frame with a double. Two batters later, an infield single from Richie Shaffer scored Hager.
Game four of the series is Sunday evening at 5:35. RH Angel Sanchez will make his first start in the Rays' system while the BayBears will have RH Michael Lee on the mound.
