
Mitchell Leads M-Braves to Victory over Generals

PEARL, MS -- Derrick Mitchell went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI including the game-winning drive in the seventh, leading the Mississippi Braves to a 5-4 victory over the Jackson Generals Saturday evening at Trustmark Park. The series continues Sunday at 5:00 PM.
Mississippi (2-1, 41-31) scored five runs on 11 hits. Jackson (1-2, 32-40) plated four runs on eight hits. Cedric Hunter and Kyle Kubitza also collected two-hits apiece. Jack Marder was the only General to collect a multi-hit game.
The M-Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first. Mycal Jones and Hunter reached on back-to-back singles. Seth Loman then walked to load the bases before Derrick Mitchell's sacrifice fly to center field plated the game's first run.
Jackson responded in the second. Julio Morban doubled and scored on another double from Patrick Kivlehan, tying the game at 1-1.
In the top of the third, Jack Marder singled and Leon Landry reached on an error. Jamal Austin singled to load the bases. Ketel Marte then grounded out, driving home Marder to make it a 2-1 game. Another ground out from Morban extended the Generals lead to 3-1.
Mississippi made it a 3-2 game in the third. Jose Peraza singled and took second on a sacrifice bunt. A ground out moved him to third before Loman delivered a RBI-single to short.
Kubitza singled to start the fourth. He advanced to third on an errant throw by the third baseman, and Elmer Reyes followed with a sacrifice fly to left-tying the game at 3-3.
Jackson took a 4-3 lead in the sixth when Landry tripled and scored on Marte's base hit to right.
The M-Braves tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth. Mitchell, Kubita and Reyes all singled to load the bases. Braeden Schlehuber then delivered a sacrifice fly to left, driving home Mitchell for the game's tying run.
Hunter led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right. He stole second before Mitchell delivered the decisive RBI-double to left field, putting the M-Braves out front 5-4.
John Cornely (5-2) tossed two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and recording two strikeouts en route to his fifth win of the season. Chasen Shreve (S, 3) came on in the ninth to notch his third save. Brandon Cunniff worked the eighth to record his fourth hold.
Williams Perez started and worked five innings for the M-Braves but did not factor in the decision. He gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk while fanning one batter.
Victor Sanchez (3-3) gave up five runs, four earned, on nine hits and a walk. He struck out four batters in 6.1 innings pitched for the Generals and took the loss.
In game four of this five-game series, M-braves right-hander J.R. Graham (1-3, 4.61) counters Generals lefty Tyler Pike. Pike will be making his Double-A debut. First pitch is slated for 5:00 PM. Gates open at 3:30 PM for "Play Catch With Dad" from 3:30 to 4:30 PM in the outfield.
