Huntsville Stars News Release
Pensacola, FL-The Huntsville Stars built an early 3-0 lead but had to come back late to hang on to defeat the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 5-4 Saturday night at Bayfront Stadium.
In the first inning, the Stars got back to back rbi singles from Jason Rogers and Shawn Zarraga. Greg Hopkins also had an rbi double making it 3-0.
Pensacola scored in the first against Stars RHP Drew Gagnon. Jesse Winker grounded out to second base scoring Yorman Rodriguez making it 3-1.
The Blue Wahoos tied the game in the fourth inning. Gagnon delivered back to back wild pitches allowing Brodie Greene and Winker to score tying the game at 3-3.
In the fifth the Blue Wahoos took the lead. Rodriguez singled off the wall in right field scoring Devin Lohman giving them a 4-3 edge.
Gagnon, who did not factor into the decision, went five innings allowing five hits on four runs. He did not walk a batter as he struck out four.
The Stars tied the game and took the lead for good in the seventh. Kentrail Davis who was at second base advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored when catcher Ross Perez tried to throw him out and the ball went up the third base line enabling Davis to score.
Jason Rogers later in the inning broke the tie on a hard single past the shortstop scoring Shea Vucinich giving the Stars a 5-4 lead.
Jose De La Torre(1-0) earned the win out of the Stars bullpen by pitching two scoreless innings.
David Goforth earned his fifteenth save after he pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings. Goforth stranded two runners on in the eighth and recorded a 1-2-3- ninth for the save.
Rogers led the Stars with a 3-5 performance with two rbi's.
The Stars(2-1, 47-25) and Blue Wahoos(1-2, 32-40) will play game four of their five game series on Sunday as the Stars lead the series 2-1. LHP Brent Suter(7-5, 3.65) will start for the Stars. Pensacola will have RHP Robert Stephenson(3-5, 3.99) on the mound. Sunday's game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 3:45 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.
