
Carlos Contreras Gets the Call, Reliever Is Cincinnati Bound

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Carlos Contreras is the latest Blue Wahoo to get the call to the Big Leagues. The Reds announced Saturday that the right-hander has been recalled and will join the club in Cincinnati.
Contreras, 23, began the year as a part of the Blue Wahoos rotation and went 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in three starts over 10.2 innings before injuring his back and going on the disabled list in April with back pain. He returned to the Blue Wahoos in early June as a reliever and logged five appearances out of the bullpen. He compiled a 1-0 record with a 1.93 ERA over 9.1 innings in relief. He added 15 strikeouts and six walks while holding opponents to a .194 average.
Contreras was signed by Cincinnati out of the Dominican Republic in 2008. He entered the season ranked as the Reds No. 7 prospect according to Baseball America's annual prospect handbook. MLB.com had him listed as the No. 5 prospect in the system. Last season, he was named a California League All-Star while playing with Bakersfield and was also selected to represent the World team in the annual Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game.
When Contreras appears for the Reds it will be his Major League debut. He has been a member of the Reds 40-man roster since September, 2012. Contreras becomes the second Wahoo to earn a direct promotion to the Major Leagues from Pensacola, he will be the 16th former Wahoo to make his Major League debut.
