New York Red Bulls News Release

HARRISON, N.J. (July 20, 2015) - The New York Red Bulls are set to host the Philadelphia Union on Tuesday for a quarter final match in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Kickoff at Red Bull Arena is set for 4 p.m., with a live stream of the action provided through www.newyorkredbulls.com.

The Red Bulls advanced to the Open Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2011 with wins over two NASL clubs, Atlanta Silverbacks FC (3-0) and the New York Cosmos (4-1). Seven different players have scored in the open cup for the Red Bulls. Sacha Kljestan led the way against the Cosmos with a goal and an assist, while Bradley Wright-Phillips set up two goals against the Silverbacks.

It will be the eighth overall appearance in a USOC quarter final for New York. The team is 4-3 in previous quarter final appearances, including a 1-1 mark at home. New York has not advanced to the Open Cup semifinals since 2003, when New York eventually fell in the final to a Chicago Fire side featuring current head coach Jesse Marsch and assistant Chris Armas in the midfield. Marsch's other assistant, Denis Hamlett, was an assistant with that Fire squad as well.

The Red Bulls have amassed an 8-6-5 record in the 2015 league campaign, and head into the all-star break in third place in the East, with games in-hand on the teams above them in the standings. New York's 29 goals scored are among the league leaders, and the club's +6 goal differential is the best in the Eastern Conference, and third-highest in the league.

New York is coming off of a 2-0 win at Orlando City on Saturday night behind goals from Sacha Kljestan and Mike Grella. Luis Robles recorded his 24th career shutout, and fifth of the season, in his 91st consecutive league appearance. That iron man streak puts Robles in second-place all-time in league history, behind only Kevin Hartman's 112 game run.

Philadelphia enters with a 6-11-4 record in league play, and have advanced to the quarter finals on the strength of a penalty shootout win over the Rochester Rhinos, and a 2-1 victory over D.C. United. The Union fell to Toronto, 2-1, on Saturday in league play.

The Union took the first meeting with New York this season, a 2-0 victory at Red Bull Arena on May 24.

This well be the second meeting between the two clubs in the Open Cup. The Red Bulls took a 2-1 victory, also at home, in 2010.

After Tuesday the Red Bulls go back-to-back with a match against Chelsea FC in the International Champions Cup on Wednesday evening at Red Bull Arena. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 8 p.m.
