Martinez Walks It off for Cardinals in 10th
July 7, 2018 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Jeremy Martinez delivered the walk-off moment the Cardinals have been waiting for all season. And Sam Tewes paid for it.
With Ramon Urias sitting on third and one out in the 10th, Martinez ripped a single into center that seemed to lift the weight of a tough early second half off this Cardinals roster. Out flew Lane Thomas and Tewes, grabbing Martinez at first base with the rest of the dugout close behind as Urias came home.
The cooler was carried by Connor Jones, whose walk-off shower mostly missed a ducking Martinez, instead engulfing the head of Tewes, whose brilliant start put Springfield in position to win in the first place. If there was ever an accidentally appropriate walk-off shower, that was it.
The final was 5-4 on Saturday night, and 5,561 fans got their money's worth at Hammons Field.
TEWES LIKE DAVIS
Tewes looked good for the second consecutive start since being recalled from High-A Palm Beach a little over a week ago.
The righty tossed seven full innings, allowing a lone solo homer in the sixth to Eli White while striking out four to just a single walk and six hits.
LANE TRAIN RIDES AGAIN
Thomas made it back-to-back games with a homer with a solo shot in the second that put the Cardinals up 1-0. He'd had a 26-game homerless drought before Friday but now has 15 dingers this season.
HOW WE GOT TO EXTRAS
A three-run home run by Ramon Urias made it 4-0 Cardinals in the fourth.
Midland got one back on White's homer, then another in the eighth on a Seth Brown run-scoring double off Estarlin Arias.
Then in the ninth, singles by Skye Bolt and Seth Brown both drove in runs, with the latter tying the game 4-4. Both runs were charged to Yeison Medina, but Will Latcham was charged with a blown save after relieving Medina and inheriting his runners.
Latcham held the RockHounds scoreless in the 10th, earning his first Double-A win a day after his first Double-A save.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals and RockHounds meet again Sunday night with first pitch at 6:10pm.
Sunday is a Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sunday and Kids Run the Bases, where kids can receive free ice cream before the game and run the bases after.
