Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Brandon Bielak hurled 6 2/3 shutout frames and his club mounted an 18-hit attack as Corpus Christi cruised to a 9-4 victory over Arkansas before 5,187 fans at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks, transformed this weekend into the Corpus Christi Raspas, have now won five of their last six series.
Bielak was staked to a 1-0 lead in the third. Stephen Wrenn cracked a two-out double, and Randy Cesar followed with an RBI single into left field.
Corpus Christi (11-4, 54-30) erupted by sending 13 men to the plate in the fifth. Alex De Goti, Lorenzo Quintana, Anibal Sierra, and Chas McCormick cracked doubles in the eight-run, eight-hit frame.
Abraham Toro, making his Double-A debut, highlighted the barrage with a towering three-run home run to right field.
The fifth was the most productive frame for the Hooks this year, in terms of both runs and hits.
Bielak (2-0) scattered four hits and two walks while striking out five in a 98-pitch performance. The Notre Dame product has won both of his Double-A assignments, while pitching 11 1/3 innings of shutout ball.
Wrenn and De Goti both notched four-hit performances.
Each man in the Corpus Christi lineup recorded a knock, and all but one scored a run.
Arkansas (9-5, 44-40) avoided the shutout by posting a four-run eighth. Eric Filia cracked a two-run home runs off Carlos Sierra.
The homestand continues Saturday night as Northwest Arkansas comes to town. The first 2,000 fans through the turnstile receive a Carlos Correa replica jersey courtesy of CITGO.
Saturday also wraps up Raspas Weekend at Whataburger. Grammy Award winning Tejano group Solido marks the occasion with a postgame concert.
Corbin Martin (5-1, 2.57) is slated to make the start for Corpus Christi. The Naturals counter with Scott Blewett (4-4, 5.38). First pitch 7:05.
