Springfield Cardinals News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Call them the New Kings on the Block.
Johan Mieses hit his first Double-A homer in his third game at Hammons Field, and it happened to be the go-ahead game-winner in the eighth. Then on the mound, Will Latcham shut things down in the ninth for his first Double-A save in his first Double-A appearance.
The late-inning success from the new kids still fresh with salt in their hair from High-A Palm Beach put a cap on a five-run Cardinals comeback win and a 9-8 final over Frisco with 3,868 fans watching the series finale at Hammons Field.
After the Cardinals cut an 8-3 Frisco lead to 8-7 in the sixth, the 22-year-old Mieses made his mark on Springfield and the game by crushing that two-run game-winning bomb deep into the night in center.
Latcham then did his thing, forcing a fly out, allowing a single and then getting a game-ending double play to end things.
THE COMEBACK
Trailing 8-3 in the sixth, Lane Thomas started the push that set the table for Mieses by driving home Andrew Knizner.
After Victor Roache followed with a single, Evan Mendoza ripped a double down the line in left that brought Thomas home and made things 8-5. With the bases loaded, Mieses blooped an RBI single into shallow right that landed between three RoughRiders and brought the Cardinals within two.
Tommy Edman then struck out for the second out, but Ramon Urias was quickly hit by a pitch that trotted Mendoza home and made it 8-7 RoughRiders.
Earlier, Thomas scorched a then-game-tying three-run homer in the bottom half of the fourth that pulled the Cardinals even at 3-3. It was his 14th dinger of the season.
The RoughRiders went up 3-0 after a two-out walk and a single were followed by a Destin Hood home run to left off an 0-2 count. It was Hood's first homer in 24 games with the RoughRiders.
Frisco went back ahead 4-3 in the fifth when Michael De Leon hit a homer to deep left. The RoughRiders pushed their lead to 8-3 in sixth courtesy of a Hood two-run double followed by a passed ball and a wild pitch that both allowed runs to cross.
GREGERSON EARNS THE W
St. Louis Cardinals rehabbing reliever Luke Gregerson earned the win with a perfect eighth inning of relief, striking out one.
Gregerson now has a 17.0-inning scoreless streak for Springfield dating back to his last nine outings of the 2008 season.
