LOWELL, Mass. - Patrick Maroon's ninth-round goal ended a marathon shootout session and gave the Philadelphia Phantoms the extra standings point in a 2-1 shootout win over the Lowell Devils on Wednesday night in Lowell. The win allowed the Phantoms to gain some ground in the standings on an active night for the East Division.
The Phantoms jumped out to an early 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest. Andreas Nodl found a loose puck in the left circle, got Lowell goaltender Jeff Frazee to commit, then roofed one high at the 3:48 mark to give the Phantoms the advantage.
The Devils tied things up with the only goal of the second period. It came with 8:53 remaining in the frame when Matt Spiller fired a shot low along the ice that got through several legs and past Scott Munroe. It was Spiller's second of the year and sent the game to the second intermission at 1-1.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the game headed to the shootout. The Phantoms went up early when Jared Ross scored in the second round, but Brad Mills evened the score with a goal in the fourth round. Nate Guenin nearly ended it in the fifth round, but his top-shelf bid on Frazee caught the goalpost.
Mills scored again in round seven to put the pressure on Jonathan Matsumoto. But the crafty center beat Frazee to keep things going. Munroe made two more saves before Maroon finally ended it in the ninth frame.
Munroe ended the night with 33 saves on 34 shots in game play and seven of nine in the shootout. Frazee stopped 28 of 29 and six of nine in the extra extra.
The Phantoms continue their road trip on Friday with a visit to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. They'll return home on Monday to host the Hamilton Bulldogs at the Wachovia Center in a special 5:05 President's Day start. Adult tickets are just $10 and kids tickets just $5 for the remainder of the 2008-09 season. Tickets are available through ComcastTIX at 1-800-298-4200, at the Wachovia Complex box office or online at Phantomshockey.com.
