Marlies to Honour Canadian Forces
February 28, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Toronto Marlies News Release
The Toronto Marlies, a proud member of the American Hockey League, will honour the thousands of men and women who serve our country at their third annual Canadian Forces Appreciation Game on Saturday, March 3 at 5 p.m. ET when they host the Rochester Americans.
The Marlies will host more than 300 Canadian Forces personnel at their game from CFB Borden, CFB Trenton, HMCS York and Land Force Central Area. The troops in attendance, who served in Afghanistan, will enjoy the game from premium seating locations throughout the Ricoh Coliseum. "Salutes to the Troops" will be integrated throughout the game, including prior to the puck drop and on the videoboard. At the conclusion of the game, all of the Canadian Forces in attendance will be invited to join the Marlies players and coaching staff at centre ice for a photo.
"The Marlies organization is proud to honour the service and sacrifice of their heroes - the fine men and women who serve in our Canadian Forces," said Leafs President and General Manager Brian Burke. "Our organization has a long-standing history with the Canadian military and we're happy to recognize their work and make our relationship more meaningful each year."
Both Burke and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment's Chief Operating Officer Tom Anselmi have participated in multiple goodwill missions to Afghanistan with Leafs and NHL Alumni to visit the Canadian Forces and Military personnel over the past few years.
Marlies players will wear camouflage jerseys throughout the entire game in honour of those who proudly serve their country in the Canadian Forces. Fans will be able to bid on these jerseys online via silent auction. All proceeds benefit the Canadian Military Families Fund & MLSE's Team Up Foundation.
The first 3,000 Marlies fans through the gates at Ricoh Coliseum will receive a Marlies Camo hat.
A limited number of tickets are available for the Marlies Canadian Forces Appreciation Game. Remaining tickets can be purchased online through marlies.ca or by calling 416.597.PUCK (7825).
Earlier this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs held Canadian Forces Appreciation Night during their game versus the Ottawa Senators.
