Maple Leafs to Face Canadian Division Teams 32 Times this Season

The American Hockey League announced today the schedule format for the 2002-2003 season. Each AHL club will play an unbalanced 80 game schedule featuring traditional and regional rivalries. The frequency of games between opponents is displayed in the attached grid. In total, 1,120 AHL regular season games will be on the 2002-2003 schedule.

The divisional alignment will see the St. John's Maple Leafs once again play in the Eastern Conference in the Canadian Division with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Manitoba Moose, and Saint John Flames. As a result the club will face the Bulldogs twelve (12) times (6 home, 6 away), the Moose eight (8) times (4 home, 4 away) and the Flames twelve (12) times (6 home, 6 away) to make up 32 of its 80 games.

In total the Maple Leafs will face 15 of the 28 teams in the League (excluding itself). The other teams the club will face include the Portland Pirates, Manchester Monarchs, Lowell Lock Monsters, Worcester IceCats, Providence Bruins, Springfield Falcons, Hartford Wolf Pack, Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Albany River Rats, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Syracuse Crunch and the Binghamton Senators.

The Maple Leafs will not face the Philadelphia Phantoms, Hershey Bears, Norfolk Admirals, Rochester Americans, Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, Cleveland Barons, Chicago Wolves, Milwaukee Admirals, Grand Rapids Griffins, Houston Aeros, Utah Grizzlies and the expansion San Antonio Stampede.

The AHL's 67th season will open on October 10th and conclude on April 6th. The complete regular season schedule will be announced in early August. The Calder Cup Playoff Format will be determined at the AHL Annual Meeting, which will take place mid July.
