Calgary, AB - Calgary Flames Vice-President & General Manager Craig Button announced today the signing of defenceman Jordan Leopold. As per club policy, terms and conditions of the deal were not disclosed.

"Jordan's accomplishments at the collegiate level are well stated," said Button. "He has tremendous potential and we look forward to him challenging for a position with our hockey club."

Leopold played the last four seasons with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers (WCHA) helping lead the team to a 2002 NCAA Championship. While serving as team captain during the 2001-02 season Leopold posted 48 points (20 goals, 28 assists) in 44 games en-route to capturing the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as college hockey's most outstanding player. Leopold, a two-time First-Team All-American and a finalist for the award during the 2000-01 season, is the fourth defenseman to win the Hobey Baker, and the fourth Golden Gopher.

The 6-foot, 210-pound senior from Golden Valley, Minn., was also the 2001-02 WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and led the nation's defensemen in scoring. Earlier in the season, he broke the University of Minnesota record for career goals by a defenseman. In 164 games over four season with the Golden Gophers the 21 year-old posted 144 points (45 goals, 99 assists) and 106 penalty munites.

The Flames acquired Leopold from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on September 26, 2000 in exchange for Andrei Nazarov and a second round choice in the 2001 Entry Draft. Leopold was drafted by the Mighty Ducks in the second round, 44th overall, in the 1999 Entry Draft.

In addition the Flames announced the signing of defenceman Rick Mrozik. The 6'2" 214 lbs. native of Duluth, Minnesota played in his second season with the Saint John Flames of the American Hockey League during the 2001-02 posting seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) and 27 penalty minutes. During the 1996-97 season the 27 year-old rearguard was named to the WCHA Second All-Star Team after posting 34 points (11 goals, 23 assists) in 38 games with Minnesota-Duluth.
