Portland, OR. - The 2020-21 Western Hockey League season both structurally and logistically looks different than any other that's taken place before.

Despite there being no culmination to the season ahead - no playoffs nor Memorial Cup - there's plenty of bright spots and momentous occasions that have already made the season well worth it.

Tonight provides us with another one of those special events, the 200th Western Hockey League game for Winterhawks forward and alternate captain Mason Mannek.

"It's pretty cool, 200 games is no joke," the 20-year-old forward began with as he beamed with pride, well aware of his pending accomplishment.

"It's a huge accomplishment for me. I know I've referred back to it a million times, but I'm just a small town kid from Utah and being able to play in 200 WHL games - it's pretty unheard of."

Accumulating his games played total in Portland since 2017, team Vice President, General Manager, and Head Coach Mike Johnston elaborated that it's not by luck nor chance that tonight's achievement has come to fruition for Mannek.

"Ever since he came here, he's the same player as you see today. He's a hard worker, he's a really good guy in the locker room and a good communicator. He's taken on more responsibility ever year - this year's he's on the penalty kill, power play and five-on-five guy for us."

Contributions on the ice evident, and as cliché as it may be, it's Mannek's contributions off the ice that may leave more of a lasting impact on those around him. Captain Nick Cicek, the only other 20-year-old on the roster besides Mannek, willingly shared his joy for his teammate's special night.

"It's a huge accomplishment, I'm so happy for him," the locker room's leader said of one of his secondary voices. "He's always helping out the younger guys, talking to the older guys, and obviously he leads by example. He's a great player all around and we love having him here."

Puck drop for Mannek's 200th game both in the WHL and in a Winterhawks sweater will take place at 5:00 p.m. tonight inside Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Fans can catch the action on the all-new WHL Live on CHL TV or listen live on the Portland Winterhawks Radio Network.
